Description:
As the possibilities to walk in the Languedoc-Roussillon region are virtually infinite, there are a few famous long-distance trails crossing the region.
Here are the most important.
The first to mention is the GR 10,the high Pyrenees trail, following roughly the Spanish border between the Atlantic and the Med.The complete route takes about 52 days.
The Languedoc section runs from the Mediterranean Sea near Banyuls and crosses the Carlit massif towards Merens, and then continue in the neighbouring Midi-Pyrenees region.
This section is 90 km and can be done in 10 days, more information on mountain huts here.
Second is the Cathar trail(sentier Cathare),which begins at the sea near Port la Nouvelle (11),goes west through the Aude department and passes a lot of Cathar castles before it ends in Foix in the Midi-Pyrenees.
It takes 12 days to complete the trail, which is also popular with horse-riders and mountainbikers.
The E4 is a European long-distance path, which crosses the Languedoc from south to north over the Pyrenees, the Black Mountains and the Cévennes before it goes across the Rhone river into the Provence.
The Stevenson trail, running criss-cross through the Cévennes,is named after a Scottish writer, who travelled around in 1878,the trail is also loved by mountainbikers.
There are thousands marked trails of various length and difficulty across the region, the marks are painted on trees or rocks.
They are listed in “topo guides”,available in bookshops, tourist offices and the larger supermarkets. We recommend the maps of IGN on 1/25000 scale, the carte de randonnée,available on the same spots.
